Chapter 23
‘Did you get the bran flakes?’ Mrs Heckles demanded, using her walking stick to rifle through the shopping bags. ‘You brought wheat biscuits last week and they just don’t get me moving the same.’
Screwing up her nose, Mollie continued to unpack Mrs Heckles’ groceries onto the kitchen counter.
‘That’s verging on TMI, Mrs Heckles.’ Mollie mumbled. ‘But yes, I did get the bran flakes. They were on offer, so I bought two boxes. Is that enough to get you going again?’
Giving the boxes a fleeting glance, Mrs Heckles nodded before shuffling back into the living room.
‘You can make fun, but just wait until you’re my age.’ She grouched. ‘I spent the best part of an hour in the bathroom this afternoon. I even missed Bargain Hunt. I haven’t missed an episode of Bargain Hunt for ten years.’
‘I’m sure Tim Wonnacott will forgive you.’ Turning off the kitchen light, Mollie traipsed after Mrs Heckles. ‘By the way, I’ve left your change in the biscuit jar.’
‘Walls have ears.’ Mrs Heckles said sternly. ‘You might as well stick your head out of the window and tell the world my PIN number.’
‘PIN number?’ Mollie repeated in surprise. ‘Wow. You’ve finally decided to join the twenty-first century.’
Fumbling around in the wooden magazine rack, Mrs Heckles produced a glossy card and held it out for Mollie’s inspection. For someone who insisted on keeping her cash in a plastic bag beneath her mattress, the fact that Mrs Heckles had decided to have a bank card came as a bit of a shock to Mollie.
‘What convinced you to take the leap?’ Mollie asked, handing the card back to Mrs Heckles. ‘Did the bus driver finally stop accepting postage stamps?’
‘No.’ Mrs Heckles retorted haughtily. ‘But I think you will find that postage stamps are legal tender.’
Not being convinced, Mollie took a seat in her favourite armchair and warmed her feet on the fire.
‘Go on then.’ She said. ‘Enlighten me.’
Trying to hide her growing grin, Mrs Heckles placed her new bank card in her lap.
‘Well, I’m sure you will be pleased to know that you’re no longer going to have to struggle home from the supermarket with twenty tins of peaches.’ She announced, holding the arm of her glasses in her mouth. ‘Those bran flakes in the kitchen are the last things you shall be buying for me.’
Frowning in confusion, Mollie waited for her neighbour to elaborate.
‘From now on, I shall be doing my shopping online.’ Mrs Heckles revealed, looking mightily proud of herself. ‘Waitrose is going to bring my peaches to that door right there. Can you believe it?’
‘That’s amazing, Mrs Heckles, but going online involves using a computer.’ Mollie replied. ‘As in, you would actually have to use a computer.’
Pointing to the bookshelf with her walking stick, Mrs Heckles beamed brightly.
‘Have a look on the second shelf.’ She instructed. ‘Go on. Take a look.’
The old armchair creaked as Mollie twisted in her seat and scanned the bookshelf curiously. A thin layer of dust covered most of the faded titles, but one new addition was impossible to miss.
